Sick PowerBook - Journal of Omnifarious

My PowerBook is sick. Yesterday, the backlight for the screen stopped coming on. It drives the screen just fine, but since the backlight doesn't come on, I can only barely make out what it says. :-(

I called up Apple about it, and they had me go through a bunch of strange incantations in which I learned more interesting keystrokes that make the PowerBook do interesting things when it's booted. The tech told me I'd have to bring it to an Apple store and have someone there check it when nothing he told me worked.

So, yesterday evening I went on a long trek to an Apple store in a mall with no roof called University Village. Here is the Apple site web page for the store. It was a long trek on a bus, and something of an adventure, since I really didn't have any idea where I was going, or how to get there by bus.

But, I found the place, and the tech confirmed my suspicions. I want to copy some stuff off of the Apple's HD before I send it to them, and since it's capable of driving an external monitor, I'll just connect my regular display to it and run the backup from there.

*sigh* Then I call up Apple, and they send me a box to ship it back to them in. So, no PowerBook for a few weeks. :-( I've come to value it very highly as a tool. I'm lucky this happened after I got an Internet connection in my house, or I'd lose touch with all of my friends in Minneapolis.

Dude, it won't be that bad...I had the same problem with my iBook during summer 2002. I sent it to Apple in the box on Wednesday afternoon, and it was back in my grubby little paws on Friday morning. Less than 48 hours of turnaround.

I shit you not.
