The evidence was there, and the discrepancies were too much to ignore, but ignored they were. Here is a nice post that clearly sums up the clear problems with the 2004 election. It is well researched and factual.

The discrepancies where not as big as claimed, the problems were more systemic to the whole voting process (meaning that both Bush and Kerry lost votes in roughly equal numbers) and that the whole exit polls don't match theory means lots of votes were stolen idea doesn't hold water.
