03:15 pm - Air conditioning

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I bought and installed an air conditioner on Saturday. A lot of people here who I tell this to are quite shocked. Nobody believes air conditioning is worth it in Seattle.

But, there are several factors to consider:

  1. It's been getting hotter and hotter over the years during the summer in Seattle.
  2. I have a very low tolerance for high heat.
  3. All of my computers are in an unventilated attic, including my main workspace. They are definitely and demonstrably capable of overheating. rainonthewind's computer in particular has shown itself to be prone to overheating.

It's a window air conditioner. I have hopes of someday being able to build a soundproof enclosure for all of my computers with a hole in the side at window height just for the air conditioner. I'm getting tired of the high white-noise levels in my workspace.

oh, I'm envious! We'd have an air conditioner in the bedroom, if the windows were normal & an air conditioner fit.
I can't stand the heat.

When my sister was looking for an apartment she was very surprised that no one was offering A/C at any place they were looking at. When she finally asked she was told that basically no one offered it since it 'wasn't needed and no one would used it'. She's still a little bothered by that but picked out a place anyhow.

That's basically correct. It's only really useful for a week or two out of the year. I, personally, would end up using it for about 1-2 months out of the year.

The biggest reason I got it is heat issues with my computers. And the second biggest reason is so that I could have a workspace at home when it was really hot out.

Yeah, we fell for the lie that we don't need it either. While it's only really needed for 2 weeks out of the year...dear god those 2 weeks are misearble *wipes the sweat dripping down her face before it lands on the keyboard*. It's definatey going to be in the plans for things to add to the house, or at least the office. It gets way to hot in here, even with a ceiling fan and a super duper floor fan that is currently pointing at da man's server.

Our house has *one* room that's air conditioned--the third-floor south-facing bedroom. The rest of us cope, mostly by being downstairs and keeping the blinds and windows closed during these days.
