Sadly, I can't figure out how to get it to tell you to swim across the Pacific.

I wish I could figure out how to get it to tell me to swim across the Pacific. :-) It can't give you directions on how to get anywhere in China, South Korea or Japan. It can for Canberra, Australia, but it won't tell you to swim the Pacific even if you start in Honolulu.

Although I'm very amused by this, I'm disappointed that it seems to have just one trick -- "swim across the atlantic from Boston to Le Havre". For example, try a really long route. It would seem incumbent upon the implementor to provide a many-to-many routing...

Yeah, that is annoying. There should be a few more links than that. :-(

Why doesn't it tell you to go down to the docks and pay passage on a ship ?

I don't know. It doesn't take ferries into account either, which is similarly disappointing. In order to use it to get routes to the Olympic Penninsula, for example, I have to find the route from various convenient ferry terminals and compare them to the route from my house to see how much time they save.

Luckily the ferry websites give the aprox sailing times on the routes.

Have you tried yahoo maps and mapquest to see if they have ferry info included their map routes ?

I should check them out. I really despise their UIs though.

Do you hate the old yahoo maps or the newer beta setup ?

When I go to yahoo maps, it gives me a choice of "Get map" which is the faster version but with less bells and whitles. Or the "Get New Map" which is the version that has satelite photos and drag & drop maps stuff.

More on depising UIs

(Link)

And, for a year or two after Google maps came out, their horrible UIs were excusable as "Well, we didn't think to do it that way." but now they're just a joke.

Oh, I just looked. Mapquest has recently gotten a bunch better. Interesting. Well, now that they're on par, maybe it'll be worth it to use them if they do some things better.

Yikes, looks like the old yahoo maps does not do ferry routes yet.

And the new yahoo maps also does not use ferry routes either.

Ferries are part of the state highway system so without that, it sucks.

The one thing I like about the new yahoo maps is the way I can set up 8 stops or more and print out directions to all of them and it plans the best routes to each place and if I want to add one at the end, it automatically open up a new blank stop for me. When I deliver pet food to the elderly once a month, the route changes sometimes, so it is easy to adjust the route. But for most people, they just need the round trip maps between two points.

One map system had some problems with copy and pasting within the maps system, so it might have been mapquest that used to do that. Not sure. I'd don't like how there is a separate box for the state in the mapquest system. Seems better to have it all in one box like google does it. Yahoo has two boxes, and that is workable somewhat. I often use yahoo maps only because I am already in yahoo groups at the time I want to use a map website. *smile*

Oh darn, yep mapquest has too many ads on it and does not use ferry routes yet.

Fnerg !

mapquest does have "Avoid highways" options for 5 oclock rush hour. And they also have avoid toll roads and seasonally closed roads options as well. We don't have toll roads here in WA, so that is not so used much around here. Holy crap ! Guess what ! I first calculated the route from my house in Shoreline WA to Bremerton WA and it showed the route down to tacoma and across the bridge ! But when I clicked on the reverse check box in mapquest, it showed the ferry route ! I'll be damned, now I need to try it for yahoo maps. Nope both directions show going to tacoma bridge. Yahoo maps does have a link that shows live traffic though....
