07:56 pm - Slightly edited reposting - I am so sick of fundamentalists

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I'm mostly copying this excellent post by meowse. But I'm editing it slightly because I never use profanity. :-) You may be amused by my edits, but I do hope they don't dilute the original intent.

I am so sick of fundamentalists of any stripe. Any religion. Get off my planet, you sick, twisted monsters.

Fundamentalist religious nutbars (of, in this case, the Jewish variety) burn down a crematorium in Israel.

You know my standard for detecting fundamentalists, nowadays? People who think that their beliefs give them rights.

Hello, you unconscionable fools. Beliefs do not give you rights. Beliefs give you funny little ideas in your heads that you walk around intellectually masturbating to. Beliefs give you things to talk about at cocktail parties, and have shouting matches with other fundamentalists about when they differ.

But they do not give you rights.

They don't give you any rights.

You can believe whatever foolish things you want to believe. You can talk about your beliefs to any adult you can persuade to give you the time of day. You can even, because I haven't figured out a way to stop you yet that isn't a cure worse than the disease, indoctrinate your own poor children into believing the same damned things.

But you don't get any special rights for believing them.

Think you do?

Then you're a fundamentalist.

And you are sorely testing my patience and ability to leave you to live your lives in peace.

You've managed to hit a peeve of mine.

No, those things don't make anyone a fundamentalist. They make people religious extremists, terrorists and criminals.

Fundamentalist just means a religion that attempts to adhere closely to its roots. There are millions of fundamentalists that don't perpetrate or support violence and hatred, who try to live according to the messages of peace found in holy scriptures around the world.

You just don't hear about any of them, 'cause the violent ones make better copy.

Maybe the word 'fundamentalist' is like the word 'hacker'

I will have to think on this a bit more. But my first thought is that a will to violence in any direct sort of way is not required.

For example, many people in the US who call themselves fundamentalists think it's perfectly OK for a teacher at a public school to get up in front of everyone and tell them all about God, as long as it's the right God. And that this is especially important if some of the children in the class have parents who don't think that the right God exists.

Yet they wouldn't choose to start a new inquisition. As long as the violence is quiet and hidden behind the soft club of the state, it's OK.

OTOH, secularists do the same thing by insisting that people with strong religious beliefs pay for a school system that doesn't teach their children the values they hold dear. A practice I think is similarly evil. I would call people who think this secular fundamentalists.

And there's the Amish, who I have no disagreements with at all, who might definitely be called fundamentalists by your definition. Nobody does though.

*chuckle* Thanks. In my opinion, profanity is generally an unwillingness to spend the time and effort to find the necessary vocabulary. Not that I ever criticize anybody for using it. Though strangely enough I discover that people tend to stop using it in my presence simply because I never do. :-)

It's totally preaching to the choir, of course, but right now I'm reading The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins. I agree with your assessment; your unprovable beliefs in the supernatural don't grant you any rights. Show me empirical proof, then we'll talk about what that means in terms of rights and responsibilities.

So you're basically threatening here to not leave their lives in peace based on your own differing beliefs? You proto-fundamentalist you!

Yeah, that's a cure worse than the disease too.

The thing is, I don't think it's in the least acceptable for someone to go around burning down an embassy over a cartoon. That sort of behavior just shouldn't be tolerated at all. And neither should shooting abortionists.
