09:10 am - Excellent quote on piracy

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

In an article on online sales and piracy linked to from a slashdot article I see this quote: "Pirates are underserved customers". Yes! Someone understands the issues.

An organization making copies of your stuff and selling them is a lot different from hoards of downloaders swapping something for free. One is a criminal enterprise making money off of your work. The other is a bunch of potential customers who you've so far failed to reach.

Now, that isn't the whole truth. In some ways, hordes of downloaders sharing the stuff you made is a detriment to your ability to make money off that stuff yourself. But mostly they represent an opportunity, not an enemy.

I sort of started rambling

I'll try to find the time to read the article! What you've written, at least, sounds very sensible. I don't know about the legislation in the USA, but downloading from unauthorised sources was criminalised rather recently here in Finland (whereas previously only file sharing was illegal) and it has caused quite an uproar. There have also been some regulations governing copies for private use (e.g. burned CDs to be kept in the car instead of the more valuable originals) and some products are protected... so you never know whether a DVD will work on your player. I guess that's so everywhere. One of the worst things is that some people, including myself, have PAID FOR mp3s downloaded from certain services because it seemed so easy and, well, legal - and because of the limited amount of copies and the usage licence, the files I purchased on my now-crashed computer no longer work on the new one. Way to go!

I'm keeping my thumbs up for a group that's currently trying to become an official political party. They call themselves the "Pirate Party" and focus on some other important citizen rights like privacy as well. Maybe there's hope.

I've watched the antics of the pirate party in Europe with great interest. I really hope they manage to get enough votes to form a swing block. I think a lot of people though are kind of apathetic about the issues the pirate party takes a stand on because they don't really understand what's at stake.

You meant hordes there, rather than hoards, right?

I think it was Tim Bray once (can't find the link again) who compared the offerings between legal streaming (for money, not for free!) of some TV shows and what the pirates were doing, and you could see that the pirates were head and shoulders above the legal stuff. When you paid, you had the privilege of getting lower resolution and less metadata. Uh, I've got this big HDTV here, I don't care for your stinking 480i crap, when it was originally broadcast at something like 720p or 1080i!
