12:39 am - American Citizen murdered by Israeli bulldozer

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

An American citizen, Rachel Corrie, was murdered by an Israeli bulldozer driver on the Gaza strip on March 16th. The bulldozer driver ran the bulldozer over her twice.

Here is a link to a story with some pictures showing just how deliberate it was. Some of the pictures are rather graphic:

Here is a link to another blog, with several links to the story.

Strangely enough, none of the major media have bothered to cover the story.

Update: Apparently the major media have covered the story. The person who wrote the blog entry was relying on news.google.com, and it wasn't showing any of the major media on the first page like you'd expect it to.

Additionally, at Rachel Corrie's memorial service, the Israeli military fired stun grenades and tear gas into the crowd.

Wow, they must've found the whole incident to be incredibly embarassing to have gone to all that trouble. Either that, or it's SOP whenever a large crowd gathers for any reason. Neither paints a very pretty picture.

I'm very glad the Internet exists.

If there gets to be enough independent media coverage of Gaza and the West Bank, it will soon become much better for the Palestinians to start using non-violent protesting techniques which play much better to a western audience. Previously, suicide bombing was all they had because no media would actually cover anything that happened in those areas.

Even if Israel tries to ban foreigners from being in those two places, it wlil only stem the tide of images a little. There are plenty of ways to sneak back and forth across the border, and people motivated enough to do it.

Widespread coverage of things like this will also encourage more people to go over there and report.

I'm very sad about what happened to her, but what she did may have had the single greatest positive impact on the situation of Palestinians under Israeli rule than anything anybody has done in the past 20 years.
