It's Amazon. I emailed ATD, asking them about 40 hours workweeks, and they essentially said that it's sort of expected that programmers work more than 40 hours a week, and that programmers who didn't weren't rewarded very highly. I've worked in an environment like that. I don't want to again. My time is precious to me. If I want to have a social life, and find someone to have kids with, I need my own time. If I want to be the kind of creative person on the job that I want to be, I need that time. What ATD wants isn't acceptable to me. I might do it if they paid me double what Amazon does, but they won't, and I'm not at all sure it'd be worth it even then.

I'm not going to tell ATD right away. I'm going to wait to see if I get an offer from them or not. And, if I do, I'll just turn it down. *sigh*

All of ATDs perks are like a well laid trap, trying to keep you at work. :-(

Why aren't you going to tell ATD right away?

I want to know if they're going to give me an offer. I want to know what it will look like if they do. I want to be able to tell them, at a time when they're most likely to listen, why I don't want to work there.

Good for you! In the end, no one lies on their deathbed wishing they spent more time at work.

People go to work so they can provide for themselves and their families, that's it. Good to hear that some employer has to hear a very reasonable "no" in response to an unreasonable request.
