Eric Raymond (aka ESR), the guy who coined the term "Open Source", has decided that perhaps the hacker community as a whole needs an emblem. ESR often makes loud comments that a lot of people disagree with, but I think the idea is interesting, and I decided to make an LJ icon for it.

His idea is only a proposal, but, IMHO, if there's going to be an emblem at all, the one he picked is an excellent choice.

A lot of hackers shy away from the idea of a community. Partly this is because hackerdom as a whole is a pretty diverse group of people. It's also because it tends to consist largely of individualists who, in some ways, resent having it pointed out that they share traits with others. But, I think the idea of community is useful in many ways, and possibly even politically useful.

I figured a better logo would be a crossed jackhammer and dental pick, representing brute force and subtlety.
