I always get ideas like this around this time of year, but this one is much more workable than my previous ideas...

Global, coordinated Christmas light displays. When people get their lights, they get a box they connect to their network. The box has a built in GPS. It informs the global coordinator of the position of that set of lights. The coordinator then sends out instructions to specific lights or strands of lights to have displays that are orchestrated over a city, state, continent or even the entire world. :-)

You could have the lights do 'The Wave' around the block, for example.

A far cry from the days of the people in a city blinking their outdoor lights when the astonauts in the Apollo missions were orbiting over.

I would rather coat the surface of the moon in nanotech so that I could use the surface as a giant billboard.

That would be hilarious fun.
