Being on call has a lot more to it than just responding to a pager. I also get all the 'tickets', or problem reports people file on the stuff we're responsible for, and I have to figure out what's wrong, why, and what to do about it.
So far, I've only been able to retire one or two tickets a day, and they're coming in at a rate of 4-5 a day. A lot of them seem to be problems that someone else has caused us, and I need to re-assign them to a different department. It takes a long time to track down the problem carefully enough to be confident in doing this.
I'm learning a lot about how our systems function, and what all the little corners are. Which is, of course, one reason why the pager rotation is done. It's a good system, just a bit painful for me right now. Especially since I really hate having things that I have to do something about now.
I'm hoping to go out to the 'En' this evening and maybe talk to people, or perhaps work on CAKE. I hope my luck holds, and I don't get paged.
