11:49 pm - Movies and plans
I watched two movies today. The first was "The Punisher" and the second was "13 Going On 30". Very different movies. I felt the need for balance, especially given the testosterone levels in the theater for the first movie.
"The Punisher" was good, but it made me very sad. The guy has essentially resigned himself to being a revenant, even after his family's death is sufficiently avenged by any measure. That is a very sad life to consign oneself to.
The whole revenge thing was a fantasy made into hollow reality. The inevitable death of the bad guys doesn't bring his family back, nor does it bring him any real peace.
There was a lot of "Oooh, yeah, that was good!" going on in the theater, which I also thought was kind of sad. Every one of the acts that spawned one of those comments was one that brought the main character farther from humanity.
"13 Going On 30" was as much estrogen filled as "The Punisher" was testosterone filled. The theater was filled with women, most of whom were teenage girls. I thought the movie very successfully transported you into the viewpoint of a 13 year old girl.
The movie had a lot to say about the power games HS girls play with eachother. It also had a very good message about what is really worth valuing in a relationship. The actress who plays the 30 year old does a very good job of acting 13. I liked the movie a lot.
On a different note, I'm going to Portland by Greyhound to spend a few hours with dddragonlady tomorrow! :-) I'm quite happy about this. She has an 18 hour layover there. I'll be in Portland from 15:15 until 01:00 on Monday. I will need to sleep on the bus coming back if I'm to be any good at all for work on Monday.
