11:34 pm - I miss the water

I miss the water. Luckily, I'm in Seattle now. :-)

I went on a ferry again today, just to go for a ride. I got on at 18:45, and got back at around 21:00. It was a nice trip along the water. The sun was setting over the mountains. Mount Rainier was visible, sticking up like (as its often described) the fist of God. On the way out, kids were playing a lot on the decks. The trip back was a lot more sedate.

I miss the water. The ocean isn't quite the same since the water doesn't hold the promise that you can swim in it. But, it's close, and the ferry ride was very calming and brought back a lot of memories.

I used to live in Grand Marais. Lake Superior was a two mile bike ride down a dirt road. We could see it from our house on a good day. In the winter, mist would rise from it in clouds in the morning. It had bigger waves than Puget Sound will ever have. If you were brave, or had an excessively warm metabolism, or were insane, or preferably all three, you could go swimming in Lake Superior. I would never go swimming in Puget Sound without really good diving equipment. Salt water, bleah!

I'm going to have to repeat that trip once or twice a month, just because. Not too often because I want it to be something a little unique. But, every once in awhile it'll be good to do. For $5.40 it's well worth the money.

Current Mood: [mood icon] contemplative

I went swimming in it once, and it wasn't that bad. It was a very warm day, and it was a shallow part that was somewhat secluded from the rest of the lake, but it was still really cold.

I'm still enjoying Amazon.

I prefer not talking much about stuff at Amazon in public posts though. Several people at work, and at least one person in my group read my journal regularly. :-)

I haven't yet read that book. I suspect Amazon has changed a lot inside since that book was written.

'Nuff said.

And I am sure it has changed, still a fun read.

Oh, I just thought I'd tell you that I friended you partly so you could see some of my friends-only posts that talk about Amazon. There aren't many, but I figured you'd be interested. :-)

You should get some friends together and have a "Ferry Party". Everyone gets together, grabs a cooler full of drinks and some party snacks and goes and has a nice little cruise on the Ferry. Someone bring some music. Sit out on the deck, or in one of the little booths and such and just chit chat and enjoy the ride, and each other.

That would be fun. I should do that. :-)

One of the things I really value about the ferry ride for myself is a sense of solitude. I never had friends to go play by the lake with, so all my memories of Lake Superior are ones of me being alone and thinking. So, your idea would just never have occurred to me.

But, it would still be fun. :-)

Yes, I agree on enjoying the solitude. I think that is one of the reasons I have to live near large bodies of water. (aside from the fact that I AM a water person anyways...) The sea is all encompassing. One could get lost in the sea and not even physically be in or on it. I have spent many days and or nights alone standing on a beach in some part of the world. Lost inside of the sea, inside of myself...

I may have to take a few ferry rides soon. I am missing the sea...

I still think that a party would also be kewl though. :D
