Public mailing list archives! Subscribe a gmail account to your public mailing list. It would put the whole mailing list in a single folder in gmail and allow list members to easily search it for stuff and see conversations. Since it's a public mailing list, there wouldn't be any huge privacy problems associated with feeding all the data to gmail.

The biggest problems would be that you wouldn't be able to see the archive unless you had the password, and having the password would also let you send mail from the archive address.

What about some scripting to grab messages from the archive and spin them out as Web pages? The script does the log-in, the storage is gmail, so it's just BW considerations.

Well, the nice thing about gmail is the UI that makes it so easy to manipulate email. So, that approach would treat gmail as a big external HD, which sort of defeats the purpose. I have plenty of my own HD space to archive mailing lists on. :-)

Well, I've not seen the gmail interface so I've no idea what it looks like 8-). And while I've plenty of HD space, it's not on-line 24-7 and public (and my dial-up is slooow). And I do know some places that will let me run the scripts, but are still stingy with the disk space.

yeah.. I was wondering about that

I just sent the following to majordomo@vger.kernel.org

subscribe linux-kernel
subscribe linux-fsdevel
subscribe linux-net
subscribe linux-raid
subscribe linux-scsi
subscribe linux-smp

That should put at least 300 message/day in my gmail account ;)

You posted the same message twice. :-) I'm going to disappear the other one.

It's gmail's fault :P

I was reminded why I hate web interfaces after replying to all the 'confirm' messages the list-bot generates, and then I double-posted to LJ ;)

It may be usefull if I want to search for a message or something, but that's probably about it.

It will be interesting to see if gmail can help you get a handle on all the messages you'll get from those lists.
