12:57 am - Another social event

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I went to yet another social event where I felt unwelcome and at a loss for how to start conversations with people. This generally seems to happen to me anytime more than about 4 people I don't know get together in the same place. I should have followed my intuition and left shortly after it started. *sigh*

Alternately, of course, I could learn how to deal with things like that. No matter how 'on' I am though, events like that always defeat me. :-/

On the plus side, I did see a couple of people I know. The photographer was someone I had met at another, much smaller gathering, and she was interesting. I'd also gone to see her work at the school she's getting her degree from. It was very good Adbusters style work. I was impressed. She was nice to talk to.

And, of course, moesmith88 was there, and that was good.

Lastly, one of the acts was amazing. I haven't seen dance that was that well done anywhere before. I've seen dance that was technically more difficult. But never anything that told a story so well. It left me wondering just how emotionally involved the two people who put the act on were, and what their relationship was like if it was an intimate one.

Wow, I'd never heard of Adbusters before. It looks really awesome.

It's too bad the Theater Schmeater thing was awkward, because it looked like it would be a lot of fun. Was it not something where you could just watch and be anonymous?

Yes, but being anonymous wasn't really what I wanted.

This is true. I met her by starting a random conversation on the bus. :-)

So the best way to get to know you would be coffee alone?

That sounds doable. I like Capitol Hill. Do you? :-)

That sounds good. Capitol Hill is a good place for people meeting and people watching. :-) (And free wifi is always nice)

Adbusters is swell.

Sorry about the awkwardness of the event. I've gotten that way, too -- I avoid family reunions and the like, unless I can guarantee that there will be a way for me to get 2-3 people alone so that we can actually have a conversation. It's totally draining to me. Hope you had fun otherwise!

You did well in that group of my friends. And everyone thought you were cool. :) Hope that cheers you a little

I always feel awkward in large (or medium-sized) groups of people, but I'm pretty sure I leave a suave, sophisticated, woman-about-town impression. (*grin*) That is to say, I think most people feel more nervous than they act.

I think you're right. But I also know that my nervousness, even when it's not apparent as nervousness, comes out in ways that discourage people from talking to me.

Of course, a lot of people are in the same boat I am. I think that's why people are so strongly attracted to people who have no difficulty talking in a crowd.
