mle292 posted an interesting link to a story about a toy that depicts the destruction of the World Trade Center. I wrote this reply, and was happy enough with it to make it a top-level post in my journal.

Ring around a rosie
pocket full of posies.
Ashes, Ashes,
we all fall down.

Of course, many now think that nursery rhyme is actually about the black death. But, snopes has a saner take (as usual). Still, there's an appeal to the idea of an ancient and pervasive tragedy being made into a nursery rhyme by the children who survived it and had to make some kind of sense of the whole ordeal.

I find the way people shy away from any images or pictures of this horrible event to be rather disturbing. It's as if we're editing it from the national consciousness when we should actually be remembering it frequently and thinking about what happened, why, and how we feel about it.

Given that we won't say anything real about it, it gives politicians all the more emotional leverage to use it to push their own agendas.

Go read the Snopes article. It has some very good reasons why that origin is not likely.
