05:34 pm - I'm highly amused

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

I saw two people on a date (I think) today in a coffee shop, and I was rather amused to overhear their conversation. The tone and energy of the conversation felt like a first date. The conversation sounded like a mutual job interview. Lots of talk of success and what it takes to be successful on both sides. They've read books by famous CEOs even. He sees the fact that Texas Instruments is currently a very inefficient and badly run company to be an opportunity for him as an engineer.

It was rather distressing. I thought people like that only existed in TV sitcoms.

You know, I like my dates to be silly and full of playfulness. Of course, that's how I like my job interviews too, so perhaps I'm a bad example. I do expect that the job interview (unless the date is way more exciting than either of us were expecting) to have a lot more problem solving involved.

Shit, I forgot to call you! I'm going to DNA tonight; it's $13. You should come on down.

I'm back in Seattle now. My plane left San Francisco at 20:30 or so. :-)

First dates...especially if it's a blind date, you spend the night trying to get to know one another and feeling eachother's interests out.

Oh, I know that. It's just what things they thought important enough to talk about. It was like someone had saved the soundtrack from some fictional show about stereotypical yuppies and played it at their table.

The other weird first date conversation goes something like this:

He: ...and then she left this suicide note on my windshield, and I was like, this is so over. I mean, I still love her and all--
She: (emphatic nodding)
He: --but it was too much.
She: I know exactly how she feels. I mean, I don't do that kind of thing any *more*, but I remember, when I was 18--this was before the drug arrest, but after the rape--
He: (nods emphatically)
She: --Well, you know, same kind of thing. All that acting out crap.
He: Crap.
She: Yup. (awkward pause). So: are you close to your mother?

i was at a restaurant in Washington DC in July, and at the next table over there was a couple having the "should we stop dating other people and be exclusive?" discussion- one of the things they were talking about was masturbation- the woman was saying she didn't want to tell the man to give it up because it would make her feel like a bitch, and the man kept saying "but it wouldn't be that hard- i want to..." they were so serious and guarded- it wasn't romantic in the least. it was so hard for me not to laugh. i wish i could have made an audio recording of it.

are you going to be in Seattle next(this) weekend?

I was once waiting to be seated at a restaurant and there were two couples near us. One was clearly on a first date; their conversation had that interview-like feel. The other couple looked like they had been together for so long that they were just coexisting and not much else. They didn't speak to each other in the waiting area, and (they were seated by us) they didn't say more than a single word to each other throughout their meal- not even a passing mention of what they were going to order. It was a weird juxtaposition.
