09:25 pm - Google has an IM service!

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

Google has a new IM service, and I'm on it already. If you're stuck on Windows and want a client that can work with it, go get gaim. If you're on Linux, also use gaim, which is already installed by default by most distributions. If you're on something else, you need a client that speaks the open Jabber protocol.

Unlike all the other major IM services, google's is encrypted from the client to google's server. This means that you, your correspondent, and google can read all your messages. This is much better than the other IM services which allow the entire world to read all your messages.

If you have a gmail account, you already have a google IM account.

I will be posting my contact info in a friends-only post if anybody wants to IM me on google. :-)

Here is a screenshot showing all the relevant data filled in for johndoe77@gmail.com

But, this isn't quite enough. You have to click on the little triangle by 'Show more options' so you can set a couple of other things...

Click on 'Remeber password' and 'Auto-login' if that's your preference. Then you should be able to bring up gaim's accounts window and log in. :-)

Will Google provide a gateway to jabber.org? (I already have a jabber account there - dmcdowell@jabber.org)

I don't know. I had an account at Jabber for awhile, but I didn't find the Jabber.org servers to be very reliable, so I gave up on them. I haven't kept up on the details of the Jabber protocol, so I don't know how easy it is for inter-Jabber gateways to work. I know that the gateways that Jabber.org had to AIM and stuff didn't seem to work that well or feel very integrated in with the rest of Jabber.

Yes, they do provide a gateway to jabber.org. :-)
