What's more interesting to me though is that they manage that entire thing without using any Flash at all, and it works nicely. I really despise Flash, so it's nice to see something like that.

Edit: Oops, I forgot to include a link to web application in question.

Nope. But, the neat thing about their avatar creation application is that it doesn't use Flash or anything, just plain old HTML + Javascript.

I'm a little slow on the draw today:-) He isn't suppose to actually move, you are just impressed with how he is created.

Re: Gotcha!

Yes. :-) All the avatar creators I've seen that were at all sophisticated used Flash. And this one is better than most, and uses no Flash at all.

I guess Flash tends to be associated with stuff moving. But that can be done with animated images or Javascript too. Though, the latter won't be anywhere near as fast or smooth as Flash is. :-(

Since when do you need Flash to make a static picture?

If it *IS* supposed to do something magical, it is quite broken.

Re: And use small words so everyone can understand.

The standard for it isn't very open. There aren't any Flash players that aren't from Macromedia that I know of. The one they have is binary only. Also, it takes up too much CPU to run. Browsers display it by default, so advertisers use it to make some really annoy flashy advertisements that try to take over your browser. Some websites are so obsessed with making everything look exactly right and having lots of fancy animations and stuff that they do the entire website in Flash, which makes it impossible for things like google to index it properly and also sets it up so that all the UI elements behave differently from the regular browser ones.

Aren't you glad you asked? :-)
