01:24 pm - Looking for a job in or near Seattle

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

So, I'm looking for a job now. My résumé is updated and I've called a few people I know. I'm curious if any of you know anybody.

Here is what I'm looking for:

Ideally someone would point me at an investor who was interested in funding CAKE development for a couple of years with possibly another couple of people. The focus would be on creating a web-service that provided various services for CAKE users, not selling CAKE itself. A business model like LJs is the idea.

Barring that, I would really like to work for a company that wasn't so interested in someone who was capable of cranking out code. I'm not any good at that. I can program well, but I'm not fast, and I'm very cautious about working with a system I don't fully understand. OTOH, I am pretty good at talking to people about technical stuff, talking about design, pointing out flaws in designs, and creating new designs with new (but hopefully much less numerous or severe) flaws. So, a job that focused on the latter more than the former would be good.

And here's a few bullet points:

Re: This might be a good idea or crap.

That's an interesting idea. One problem is that a lot of programming projects take quite awhile to finish. I think I can accomplish the same sort of goal by putting work into Open Source projects.

I think a combination of politics and not being happy with me. I suspect that neither alone would've been quite enough.

Ack! Fired? I'm sorry to hear. :( I've been there and it's not happy.

But know that now you can try to find a happier place to work. It might be tough to find a job at the end of the year—but the beginning of the year is a great time to look because that's when budgets are approved/allocated for such things.

Be optimistic, get some hugs from the people who love you, and be confident with the knowledge that you'll find a happier job soon. :)

pointing out flaws in designs, and creating new ones

Creating new flaws? Intriguing pitch... ;-)

*chuckle* Though this isn't a cover letter or resume where making sure it can't be misread is really important, I went and fixed it anyway, just because. :-)

And as a side-note, your description of yourself is creepily similar to what I'd say about me, except for the Python part (I'm a Perl person, myself, but of the "clean" type).

I should go and check out StreamMod again, one of these days. :-)

I should go and work on it again, one of these days. :-) I have some ideas about how I might use template meta-programming to make some things about how StreamModule's work much nicer and to reduce duplicate (well, almost duplicate) code in other parts of the system as well. I also need to make an epoll and a kqueue based event engine, or make it so I can rely on libevent instead.

I'm wanting to have some stream components for XPLC, maybe they could be integrated some? I'd see a C++-specific generic front end (making the streams C++-like and easy to use), with the guts of the streams themselves being implemented with XPLC components (which would be cross-language, if I'd get off my arse and do that IDL compiler!).

I should go and work on XPLC again, one of these days. :-)
