11:28 pm - Upgrading my webserver this weekend
I spent this weekend upgrading from Fedora Core 6 to Fedora 7. After the huge pain of the past few upgrades, I decided to start versioning the
/etc directory with Mercurial. The strategy worked out really well. Upgrading was much simpler this time. And this computer has the most software that needs to be configured in
/etc, so it was the acid test.
I was caught by a few things from
/var that I should've remembered. First was
/var/lib/mailman so none of the data about any of the mailing lists I run was copied over when I started mailman. Oops. The second was
/var/spool/postfix/postgrey which caused postgrey to start re-building the database of trusted senders, which was causing mail to be delayed. The last was the Postfix mail queue. But I looked and I don't care if any of those messages are dropped.
/var tripped me up and I'm going to have to remember that in the future. Otherwise it went well.
