I will be offline for awhile soon, backup MX anyone? - Journal of Omnifarious

03:02 pm - I will be offline for awhile soon, backup MX anyone?

Previous Entry Share Next Entry

My servers will be offline for nearly a week starting on November 30th and ending on December 6th (hopefully). This means that http://www.omnifarious.org/ will be down, and no mail to omnifarious.org addresses will be delivered.

*sigh* This is the part about moving that I hate almost as much as packing.

Anyway, if anybody who is online and running a mail server is willing to be my backup MX and store messages for the duration I would be very grateful. Especially if you have fairly good spam filtering that always blocks spam before accepting delivery so people who send legitimate mail that's accidentally blocked are given a decent bounce message.

It probably would, but I bet you'd have to set up a mailserver and stuff and that's a whole lot of work.

I bet you do have a website there. :-) Do you get to edit the apache config and add another virtual host or two? :-) I have in mind coding up a quick CGI that returns a '503 Resource not available' message to anybody who asks for anything and gives a header that will return the date I expect things to be up again.

I have a VPS with VPSLink I've set up with lighttpd that could probably serve as that.

A VPS is a Virtual Private Server? Yes, that'd work just fine. You get as many virtual hosts as you want with that. :-)

Do you think you could set up lighthttpd to respond to these domains as virtual hosts? And then tell me the IP of your Dreamhost machine? :-)

  • hg.omnifarious.org
  • www.cakem.net

Basically, these are all the entry pages for stuff I have that I want to try to keep search engines from de-listing. So I figure that dropping a little script that returns 503 for all of them might help.

If you can't take the time to do it, or don't know how, it's not a big disaster or anything. I might find someone else who can do it, or just not do it at all. It's likely not a horrible thing. Just sort of trying to keep from falling in the rankings and trying to inform people what's wrong.

Okay, I think I did it, but hard to tell for sure--I'd test by setting your hosts file before actually pointing it over. I sent you an email with all the info including the SSH account. I tried to put symlinks to the site directories in your home directory, but they kept doing the darndest thing, so here they are manually:

/var/www/vhosts/www.omnifarious.org
/var/www/vhosts/www.cakem.net
/var/www/vhosts/hg.omnifarious.org

(I was using the commands:

ln -s /var/www/vhosts/www.omnifarious.org
ln -s /var/www/vhosts/hg.omnifarious.org
ln -s /var/www/vhosts/www.cakem.net

While in the home directory. But for some reason when it made the symlinks, there would be a symlink INSIDE the directory back to your home directory and it drove me nuts.)

Thanks a whole bunch. We can hash out configuration details at some future date. :-)

Sure

I've got a mailserver setup to run SpamAssassin during the SMTP session (before replying to the DATA command) with plenty of free disk space. I'm in an airport now, but if you bug me tomorrow I'll add the relay line to the config and ensure the spooler has enough quota. Just email slamb at slamb dot org.

Re: MX backup

I can do it but I'm having capacity problems right now. I need to get more disk in there but these other life issues keep coming up.

So, if you can find someone else, that would likely be good.
