From this post of noveldevice's.

Children are targets of Nigerian witch hunt

I'm not an atheist. But I'm not not an atheist either. I don't believe in mysticism or the supernatural of any sort. I firmly believe that all the answers to the events and causes of the world we perceive with our senses can be found by science. But people have a need for connection and to participate in some greater dimly perceived whole. I think that is where religion and philosophy belong.

But I think that religion as currently practiced by most people in the world is very harmful. Mostly because they do not follow the rule that it cannot give them any useful answers about the things that happen in the world of our senses. They don't look to it for defining some sort of over-arching framework for their lives and actions. They look to it to explain why they're sick, or why the rain did or didn't happen, or any number of other things that it is utterly useless for.

I think the biggest problem we have in the world today is religion. And the article above is just one in a list of many, many sad examples of why.

I'm so appalled that I don't even have words.

This is the reason I dislike religion so much, even those who practice a form of religion that is apparently benign. Religion requires faith without proof, an unquestioning devotion to authority. While certain versions of religion may encourage peace, love and kindness, the act of discouraging critical thinking and choosing the holy text over scientific inquiry opens the door for these types of bastards to exploit it and commit true atrocities.

When an atheist does bad things, he doesn't do it because he's an atheist, he does it for other reasons and happens to have no belief in after-death punishment. But when a religious man does bad things, it's usually directly because his religion tells him to and he believes he is right and holy for doing so. Atheism does not cause evil, but religion often does.

It would take years of education for these people to even grasp the fundamentals of science to know what really causes breast cancer and malaria and the sociology of cults and charletains. But I strongly suspect they would resist any attempts at education thanks to the unquestioning faith in their pastors ... those evil, malignant, completely fucked up creatures. I do not believe in the supernatural of any kind, but they are proof of the existence of evil.

And I don't even like kids and I am still mortified.
