I named the computer I'm using for tazfrog's firewall 'Santa'. It decides who's naughty or nice. :-) Also, it fits in with the 'childhood fear' theme for the names of my other computers. The kid that bursts into tears on Santa's lap is afraid.

I like the fact that it twists something cheerful and bright into something dark with a fearful edge to it. Not that I think Christmas is bunk or anything like that. I like Christmas (or, well, the secular version - commercialism anyway). It's just interesting and intriguing that even the brightest and most cheery things can be ominous or scary from the right perspective.

That's a pretty cool firewall name.

I love Christmas, but it's not the commercialism for me. For me, it's the meaningful, pagan-y "light coming out of the darkness" symbolic trope. That, and meditating on maternal love, which is a really intense and personal kind of love that can be very redeeming.

Whether that "light" is expressed as the the gradual increase of the sun's maximum altitude, or some sort of candle / star / love-towards-all-humankind thing, or even a "son of God, light of the world, born of woman to save us all" thing, to me they're all variations on the same underlying theme. Although saying so would probably get me kicked out of the church, if I hadn't already left. :-)

My firewall's name is Erebus, the greek god who personified darkness (and separate from Nyx, who personified night). True to form, I'm closed off most services from the outside.
