Trinity runs 'ssh' and 'nmap' on a computer that runs Unix. She even had the right prompts (she had a root shell) and everything. I use those tools all the time. I was highly amused. I actually laughed out loud in the theater at that scene, and it wasn't otherwise funny. First time I'd ever seen real computer stuff in a movie. Of course, they did take some cinematic license, but they largely stayed with the way the technology actually worked. I was impressed. :-)

Heh. I remember watching Jurassic Park in the theater when it first came out. Late in the movie, the cute little girl started hacking into their computer system, and she said, "Hey, I know this! This is UNIX!" The screen showed the most cumbersome file manager ever -- it was some sort of 3-D virtual reality filesystem that looked good on the big screen, but would probably drive real users absolutely bonkers. Going to a directory like /home/tam/docs/OldStatusReports/1999/May/ would take about 60 seconds to animate all the folders in all the other directories.

So I'm glad to hear that The Matrix Reloaded got it right.
