Well, on Tuesday, I dealt with a bunch of the fallout from a bad security breach in the journal of someone close to me. She may leave LJ completely now. I'm currently writing a script that will download her entire LJ along with the comments and things. I'm pretty sad about it, and also kind of angry at the person who I think is mainly responsible. Notice to those of you who know more, I didn't mention her name.

Also on Tuesday, my housemate, maatnofret, lost her job. :-( But, as a good point, the drummer for Invisible Pedestrian responded to her email, jokingly talking about some Systems Engineering jobs they have at General Dynamics.

On Wednesday, I got caught up in a few interesting discussions on #c++ and #sockets on irc.freenode.net. I also went to a career thing at General Dynamics where I was told that I couldn't have a job with a title of 'Engineer' without a college degree because of some stupid edict by their corporate parent company. The people I talked to didn't seem happy about the policy, and it seems like there may be ways of sneaking around it. So, maybe something will work out.

Today, I kinda didn't get much done, partly because I decided to go off of caffeine since I also purchased painkillers for the headache problem on Wednesday. But, doing that makes me tired and not think so well. Lots of people asked me questions about stuff today, and I helped with a few complicated things. I didn't get much done on my LJ download project, partly because I was too excited about a new idea I talked about before.

I also implemented part of my new idea. It's pretty ugly in one way, and beautiful in another. I'll post it in another entry marked with a geeky tag. :-)

Also, to add insult to maatnofret's injury, her computer's HD died. *sigh* It was a model I thought was really good when I had her buy it, and forgot about later when I learned about IBM's hard-drive problems. :-( Now she needs a new one. I have some really old ones that I don't trust to last very long that are also slow and small. I can put those in her computer, but she really needs a new one instead. Anybody want to get her an early birthday present? :-)

Ooh, when you get that download script done, will you let us know?

Also, congratulations on kicking the caffeine habit. It is hard, but I think it's worthwhile.

When I get it done, I'll tell you.

It will be written for Python 2.2+ under Linux, so I'm not sure how well it will work anywhere else. Also, I'm going to stick stuff in it to purposely slow things down so as to avoid overwhelming their servers. Simply using their download interface to download an LJ will be sort of not nice. But, the download script is also going to be doing some other things in order to get the comments associated with each entry, and those will probably be really stressful on their poor servers.

I may use the download program myself to download my public LJ entries to put them on my own web page. I'm so used to programming from the bare OS on up. It'll do my programmings skills good to start using random components other people have made.

I actually kick caffeine every few months. I like for caffeine to work, so I stop drinking it to reduce my tolerance so it will start working again. :-)
